Judge Ye Not
To be judged and to judge is part of man's fickle self. This natural tendency is deeply entrenched in one's psyhe, either consciously or unconsciously.
What is meant to be judged? It means being at the receiving end of accusations, either truthfully or wrongfully, and being perceived by the public as worst as the lowest animal as they can imagine. This takes a toll on the subject's life because it is like a death sentence. It is like being guillotined in public's view leaving the subject faceless. The not-so-good-thing about this is when the subject decides to get even with the persecutors.
What is it like to judge? Obviously, this is a pleasurable thing to do. Lashing harsh words to any person, either dead or living, is a favorite pastime. This is so, because it is man's nature to long for a feeling that one is morally superior over the rest. In this country, sad to say, this is something that is more cultural than a personal' choice. It is somewhat a general rule than an exception.
In Jesus' story on the the Parable of Talents, three types of persons are presented to us. The eldest son, the obedient and the self-righteous one, finds discomfort with his father's decision to forgive what he considers as the unforgivable younger brother because of his deplorable and detestable past. Then we have the younger brother, the adjudged and convicted felon in the eyes of his eldest brother notwithstanding his repentant self. And there we have their father whose judgment is overpowered by his merciful heart and divine wisdom.
Three personalities in one story. Sometimes we fit in the role of the damned younger brother, sometimes of the judgmental eldest brother. What truthfully remain and a great challenge for us all is to aspire for the role of the father, always forgiving and merciful. Are we not supposed to be like him so that it would be easier as well for God to forgive us and save us from our own sinfulness?
